Improv to benefit veteransHumor is good for the soul. It’s almost impossible to laugh while you’re glum. This is why Missy’s Veterans of Valor came upon the idea of a ‘Night of Improv’ Fundraiser and Awards Gala 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20. The event, at McHenry Moose Lodge #691, promises to help you ‘Get Your Yuks’ while raising funds for dental care for veterans.

“Laughter is cathartic,” said Jonathon Wills, the Chief Operating Officer for the organization. “The idea of combining a good cause with a good time just makes sense.

The ‘Missy’ in Missy’s Veterans of Valor refers to Missy Robel, the founder of the organization, has been a nurse for 40 years. That includes the last eight years where she has served as a staff nurse at the James A Lovell Federal Health Care Center.

“Veterans nationwide are desperately in need of dental care,” said Robel. “A cavity gone untreated can become so infected that the pain is stronger than anything over-the-counter pain pills can help. If the tooth gets infected, the problem can spread and cause damage throughout the veteran’s body.”

To date, Robel has helped to raise more than $15,000 helping veterans receive dental care. Missy’s Veterans of Valor routinely holds meat and 50/50 raffles, and Veterans Picnics at local VFWs to raise money, support, and awareness.

The McHenry Moose Lodge #691 is located at 3535 N Richmond Road, Johnsburg. Tickets are $10. You can order tickets by calling the Moose Lodge at (815) 385-6955 or Missy’s VOV at (833) MYVETRN (698-3876). You can also send an email to
