While I hope all who read this have a happy holiday I’m aware that there are children in our community who are living with circumstances beyond their control that challenge their ability to count on a Merry Christmas. For many of these, when the economy hit a wall in 2008, their families took it on the chin. They lost jobs, lost wages and lost opportunity. Many of the children affected by the economic cliff we went over weren’t even born yet but the waves of that event continue to wash over their lives and their families continue to struggle to keep their heads above water.

I’ve had the good fortune to belong to a group, for a number of these years in the shadow of that economic collapse, that has helped make a difference in the lives of area children from families still struggling with those economic realities. That group is MC3, the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce business networking group. And MC3 supports McHenry Police Charities and their program called Shop With A Cop.

It is through Shop With A Cop that MC3 members are able to help and it is through Shop With A Cop that you can make a difference, too. What’s really wonderful about helping through Shop With A Cop is that it’s a lot of fun. In fact, it comes with quite a party.

Join the fun – Join the party

What party? The Shop With A Cop party from 6 p.m. to midnight Nov. 19 at the McHenry VFW, 3002 Hwy 120 east of the Fox River – that’s ‘what party.’ This is an annual bash to remember. Live music, good food, a cash bar and more prizes than you can imagine: the Shop With A Cop party has it all.

The live music, this year, will feature the talents of the Thompson Duo and LOL. The food includes pizza and desserts from highly talented cake and cupcake experts. And the prizes …?

The prizes fill table after table when you enter the door to the VFW. The initial section of tables is dedicated to raffle items. With these, you put a raffle ticket into a cup by each prize you’d like to win. Then, the next section of tables is for silent auction items. The highest bids on the sheets accompanying each prize.

Finally, the tables are for the live auction items. Here you’ll find, for the second year in a row, an African safari to bid on. In past years, they’ve had tickets to Bears or Bulls games, televisions and more in the live-auction section. Who knows what they’ll have this year. Actually, you can play a role in determining what prizes are found on the tables as members of MC3 are busy scouring the countryside seeking donations to fill the tables.

Care to donate to help a child?

Quality gifts are greatly appreciated. And this is where you can help. Yes, we will accept cash donations but we also eagerly accept prizes to fill the tables. If you have such a prize, you can drop it off at the McHenry Area Chamber office – 1257 N. Green Street, McHenry. You can also make arrangements for me to pickup your donation. If that works for you, just give me a call at 815.909.4677.

If you’d like, you can fill out a Sponsor Form found here.
